Mr. Carden was an Assistant District Attorney with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office in Syracuse, NY, where he was assigned to the DWI Bureau.
The DWI Bureau prosecutes cases involving alcohol and driving offenses or the sale of alcohol to minors. Mr. Carden supervised a county-wide case load consisting of felony and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, boating while intoxicated, snowmobiling while intoxicated, and aggravated unlicensed operation crimes.
Mr. Carden has instructed for the Prosecutor’s Training Institute, District Attorney’s Office, County Magistrates Association, Syracuse University Moot Court Team, and Stop DWI Driver Improvement Program.
In addition to his DWI duties, Mr. Carden coordinated the Veteran’s Diversion Program for the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office. This program ensures that the criminal justice system addresses the needs of combat veterans who have served our country, while maintaining the safety of our community.
Prior to being appointed to the DWI Bureau, he served in the Municipal Courts Bureau where he handled arraignments, preliminary hearings, six different courts, and coordinated the ridealong program between law enforcement agencies and the office.
Mr. Carden served as an Assistant District Attorney for 5 years. Before joining the DA’s Office, Clifton served on active duty in the infantry of the United States Marine Corps. His active duty assignments included serving with the Marine Corps Security Force Company in Kings Bay, Ga. and two deployments with Kilo Company 3rd Battalion 8th Marines. After leaving active duty, he continued his service in the Army Reserve with the 88th Military Police Company of Fort Eustis, Virginia. As a civilian, Mr. Carden worked in the City of Norfolk, Virginia, at both the federal and local level, as a police officer until attending law school.
Mr. Carden received his law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and his undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University.
He is on the editorial board of the Onondaga County Bar Association and an active member of the New York Bar Association, Onondaga County Bar Association, New York State Defenders Association, and Marine Corps League.
Mr. Dotzler is a founding partner of Carden Dotzler, PLLC and heads the White Collar Defense practice group. He concentrates his practice on criminal defense, DWI defense and traffic defense, along with a specialized focus in defending white collar offenses. He regularly represents clients who are charged with criminal, DWI and traffic offenses in Onondaga County Court, Syracuse City Court, and other courts throughout Central New York.
Before entering private practice, Mr. Dotzler served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office for seven years. There, he successfully prosecuted hundreds of felony-level white collar crimes in the Economic Fraud and Financial Crimes Bureau, including embezzlement, forgery, identity theft, tax evasion, counterfeiting and welfare fraud crimes, as well as a variety of misdemeanor and traffic-related offenses, including the prosecution of drug and narcotic offenses. At the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Dotzler gained valuable trial experience and spent countless hours in the courtroom, working closely with local law enforcement, forensic auditors and financial institutions.
Mr. Dotzler earned his Law Degree (J.D.) and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His knowledge, training and litigation experience gives him the unique ability to zealously represent and counsel his clients in a wide array of criminal defense and business related matters.

Mr. Hammond is a former military prosecutor and defense lawyer with over a decade of experience fighting for service members and their families. He served nine years and two combat tours as an active duty US Army officer, then joined the Reserves and settled down in Syracuse to be near family.
In the Army, Mr. Hammond advised commanders and leaders in combat on the legal parameters of warfare. He honed his trial skills in the courtroom as a prosecutor, then defended hundreds of soldiers accused of serious criminal offenses on appeal. Now representing people across Central New York, he puts the same level of commitment into his civilian law practice.
In addition to defending the rights of Central New Yorkers, Mr. Hammond continues to maintain a veteran-focused practice. He represents Soldiers on appeal before the military appellate courts and often takes on cases to fix injustices in servicemembers’ military records.
Mr. Hammond obtained his B.A. at North Carolina State University, magna cum laude, and attended Syracuse University College of Law for his J.D., summa cum laude.

Karen Balman is office manager and legal assistant at Carden Dotzler Hammond. A Central New York native, Karen graduated from LeMoyne College with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in social work at Syracuse University. In 2017, Karen performed a year-long internship with Federal Probation.
Karen is committed to preserving the dignity, worth and self-determination of our clients. With this in mind, Karen interviews clients and assists our attorneys in gathering equities. As wife and daughter of United States Army veterans, Karen has a passion for veteran’s issues.

August (Gus) J. Nordone, Esq., passed away at the age of 69 on August 9, 2016 surrounded by family and friends.
Gus was a graduate of Syracuse University Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1975. Prior to his passing, Gus was Of Counsel at the law firm of Carden Dotzler, PLLC, where he was a highly respected member of the legal community. Gus was an avid golfer, enjoyed toy trains and was a member of the National Railway Historical Society.
Gus represented clients on a wide array of legal matters, including criminal defense, DWI defense and civil litigation. He was a consummate professional and treated all of his clients with respect and provided superb legal representation.
